The multi-functional facility includes dedicated floors for collaborative workspaces, an automated hydroponic farm in the lobby, and a customer experience center with a rooftop test track. Quiet Efficiency and Smart Design
One striking feature during the tour was the remarkable quietness of the factory floor, a departure from traditional noisy manufacturing plants. The process is broken into customizable “nodes,” enabling individualized vehicle assembly. Hyundai’s manufacturing engineers utilize a digital twin – a virtual representation of the entire factory – to optimize production paths, providing both speed and flexibility in manufacturing.
Augmented Workers and Collaborative Robots
The workers at HMGICS are equipped with exoskeletons and augmented reality technology to enhance efficiency and safety. These technologies assist workers in tasks that can be physically demanding, such as installing components on vehicles. Collaborative robots, including Spot robot dogs from Boston Dynamics, work alongside human counterparts, performing tasks like quality control checks. Hyundai Ioniq 5-based Robotaxi
HMGICS currently produces the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV, demonstrating the flexibility of lineless assembly. A portion of the production is diverted to create Ioniq 5-based robotaxis equipped with additional sensors for autonomous operation. Developed in collaboration with Motional, a joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv. These robotaxis seamlessly integrate into the main assembly queue after receiving their extra gear, showcasing the adaptability of the facility.
The Flexible Factory of the Future:
Alpesh Patel, VP and Head of Hyundai’s Smart Factory Technology Innovation Group, emphasizes that the lessons learned from building the Ioniq 5 will pave the way for future models. The facility plans to add the Ioniq 6 and three more E-GMP-based Ioniq models next year.
