Managing and accessing our digital content has evolved with the advent of cloud storage. Gone are the days when we had to manually transfer files between devices to ensure data backup and availability in multiple locations. If you recall plugging in your iPhone or Android to your computer to back up photos, you’d understand the effort required. Downloading Google Photos Media
However, in today’s digital landscape, things have changed. When attempting to transfer photos and videos from your smartphone to your computer, you may notice that only a fraction of the media makes its way to your PC. This can be perplexing, especially considering the accessibility of media on the phone. Why isn’t the transfer seamless?
One Reddit user, Spax123, encountered this issue while trying to transfer their late wife’s media library from Google Photos on her Pixel to their PC. Only the photos and videos from the last six months were making it to the computer, leaving about four and a half years’ worth of images seemingly trapped on the phone. Even checking the Google Drive account didn’t reveal these missing photos.
The good news is that this story has a happy ending. Another Redditor, degggendorf, correctly deduced that the remaining photos and videos were stored in the cloud, with only recent ones saved on the Pixel itself. Google doesn’t explicitly communicate this, leading to confusion among users who assume all their photos are in one place.
How to download some photos from Google Photos
If you’re not looking to download everything from Google Photos and just want a specific set of photos or videos, you’re in luck. Follow these simple steps to download a selected batch:
- Access Google Photos: Head over to Google Photos on your laptop or PC (or Mac). Unfortunately, the mobile version doesn’t offer a download option, although you can share items.
- Select Your Media: Hover your cursor over a photo, and you’ll see a circle appear at the top-left corner. Click on this circle for each photo or video you wish to download. If you want to select multiple items at once, hold down the Shift key and click on your desired items. Alternatively, hover over a date and click the tick that appears to select all media from that specific day.
- Initiate Download: Once you’ve made your selections, click on the three dots located at the top right corner of the screen. From the dropdown menu, choose “Download” or simply press Shift + D.
- Start Downloading: Your download will commence, and you’ll have your chosen photos or videos saved to your device.
